In July 2001 Lexmark introduced the T620 and T622, two of the latest base models of their T-series laser printers. After seven years of Optra^® products, the name was dropped, simplifying the model numbering scheme. Many of the features of the original Optra T-series were retained, with these latest T-machines containing new, faster engines based on Lexmark engine technology. The physical design was unchanged from that of their predecessors, but the engines were redesigned for faster performance and paper handling, and the print cartridges were modified to make them incompatible with the Optra models.

The T620 model replaced the Optra T614 printers, while the T622 model replaced the Optra T616 printers. At the time of release, the T620 and T622 offered the highest yield of any office printer on the market, and were the fastest of any laser printer under $2,000. Their cartridges include a smart chip similar to, but more powerful than those in the Optra T-series. Print speeds were increased, as were duty cycles and toner yields.

The new series includes the base T620 and T622, the network-ready T620n and T622n, and T620dn and T622dn network-ready models with duplex units standard. The T620in and T622in models, released in August 2001, allowed printing of pre-programmed web pages without having to connect to a PC.

The T620 and T622 printers were targeted at large workgroups and corporate enterprise applications. Both shipped with 10,000-page starter cartridges. Standard and high yield cartridges in both Prebate and non-Prebate versions are available, as well as a MICR cartridge and a high yield Prebate cartridge for special label applications.
